Do you remember back in the day, when our parents had those red light parties in the basement? At that time, people kept crates upon crates of albums . You could find them in almost any home. I remember my parents speaking about Prince and his petite stature. I remember hearing Sexy Dancer on the radio then running down to the basement to find his album and see what this man looked like. When my parents weren't home, I would naturally sneak downstairs and play the albums, just to hear him sing. As I grew older, near the age 16, Purple Rain premiered at the movies. Now keep in mind, I was not permitted to see it. My parents felt I was still far too young and you needed to have someone (at least the age of 18) to escort you. It didn't take long for me to devise a plan to make sure I could see this movie and make sure I could see him. Now, because our neighbors children were so very polite and courteous, it wasn't hard to convince my parents to allow me to spend the night. Not long after my arrival, we were on our way in my friend's big sister's car to see Purple Rain. Our "big sister" covering our eyes during inappropriate moments in the movie. After that, I remember taking the bus back and forward to my new Christian school. The best part about that ride was a record store with a life sized cardboard replica of Prince on his motorcycle. They never knew, but I stopped by that store twice a day, 5 days a week to visit my cardboard Prince. Until the day that I left home, I've always had to sneak around to listen to his music or to see him perform. For example, I would have to put a towel across the bottom of my door, so that I could watch his videos with the sound turned all the way down. That way, no one ever knew I was awake and watching TV in the middle of the night (That's still funny to me) I had to become a pro, because Prince was the certified "bad boy" and our parents intended to protect our innocence no matter what the cost. Unfortunately, all of this was to my dismay, because he was (and still is) my favorite artist. Prince, you are an intricate portion of every experience that molded me into the person I am today. You are the star of my musical life story. I love you forever, in heaven and on earth.
