I first saw Sadie, formerly Bonita, in a picture sent to me by my best friend's mom. She was sitting in a piece of construction equipment outside of Houston. Now, I wasn’t in the market for a pup. My roommate had just gotten her rescue dog, and with two cats settled in, we had a full house. But after seeing that picture, there was no decision to be made. This little homeless pup was about to be mine, and I was ecstatic, ready for all the kisses, adventures, and love. The next week, we drove to Houston to pick her up.

All the excitement about my new furry friend was followed shortly by a lot of emotion. She was terrified of everything, including me. She had never worn a leash and never been in a car. It became clear that this four-month-old mixed-breed baby had never had a home, and it was heart wrenching to see her quiver at every new experience.

Sadie was so lucky to find some confidence in her “sister” Scarlett, who my roommate rescued shortly before Sadie arrived. After a little time to get comfortable, Sadie and Scar became fast friends.

Over the coming months there were many challenges and tears, but watching Sadie slowly gain her confidence and become a happy, social, and healthy pup gave me incredible hope. It taught me patience, and her spirit for life and her love showed me that, while many things don’t come easy, great things can happen if you persevere.
