In January 2019, I saw a foster plea for an adult chihuahua whose back legs were paralyzed. I could offer her a room to herself and a backyard I could help her get around, so I responded. For a couple of days, I kept Laika (then Eva) isolated from Jack and Harley. Eventually, I started letting everyone hang out in the yard together. Not only did she appreciate the company, but after only a couple of days, she started standing up and even taking a couple of steps here and there! She practiced every day, and every day, she was able to walk a little more. Between her determination, her sweet nature, and the fact she's the only dog Cassi never hissed at, I was convinced I needed to make her a permanent member of the pack.
The orthopedic surgeon believed her issue stemmed from a herniated disc, but since there were no obvious signs of pain, the recommendation was to get her in to rehab to build up her strength rather than doing exploratory surgery. Laika has now been in rehab for four months, and she's is a pro at the cavaletti steps and can easily climb two to three regular steps, including the make-shift one up to the sofa.
Laika came to me at the right time. Jack's health was declining, and I knew that, when the day came, I would be in pieces and Harley would be lonely and confused, so having this little ray of sunshine and spirit in our castle was good for the whole pack.
From day one, I felt Laika had a striking resemblance to Jack. They seemed to have the exact same build, including ears. Jack had very bad teeth, and it turns out Laika needs to lose a few, herself. I look forward to pampering her during her recovery so she can get back to her usual, upbeat and sweet self!
